Teodóra Róka
Teodóra Róka was born in Hungary in 1998, currently living in the Netherlands. In Hungary, she studied art history and the fundaments of drawing from Zoltán Farkas. At the age of 18, she moved to the Netherlands on her own - attending NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. During her university years in the Netherlands, she took lessons of painting techniques from Sjaak Menger, working as a studio assistant in his atelier for a year. Following that, she completed her specialization in Modern and Contemporary Art and Design - Modern Art & Ideas by MoMA.
For the past 4 years, she maintains her own parctice as an independent artist and curator in the North of the Netherlands. Next to several solo- and group exhibitions, she founded and curated the ‘DREAMZZ’ artist residency for female artists, collaborated with parties such as Explore the North festival, COOLTURE, Ffataal, Arcadia, VHDG and Stukafest. Róka’s interdisciplinary practice is mainly focused on painting, sculptures and performance art. She believes in giving back to her community, and she has generously donated her time and work over the years to charities as International Kinderhulp Nederland, Kesho Congo NGO and government schools of Bakhtapur, Nepal.
Teodóra Róka is creating colourful expressions through a stream-of-conscious process. Her main source of inspiration is the subconscious, dreams, memories and certain moments in time, and how these become fluid and intertwine with each other in the present. She is creating musical structures where sound, shape and memories meet. Through the act of meticulously applying layer over layer, her artworks are capturing the fragility and intertwined nature of thoughts passing through the mind. Her intuitive and organic forms are creating themselves in time and space, through many layers over layers building up the history of her artworks. There is something contradictory in the essence of her works, which is stimulating while calming, pulls the viewer in but evokes distance, longing and infinity.
